Bradford Council has approved the demolition of the Kirkgate Shopping Centre, and the former Oastler Market building, to make way a new mixed-use development of housing and commercial space.
Phase one of the City Village scheme will see over 100 townhouses built at the very northern part of Bradford City Centre across two large sites. Future phases will see the creation of a new central park where the Kirkgate Centre currently stands.
As a consultee on the initial Planning Application, Bradford Civic Society raised concerns about inclusion of surface car parking in the development. The full text of the Civic Society’s comments can be read on the Bradford Council planning portal.
It is understood that demolition of the former Oastler Market building will begin in Spring 2026, followed by the closure and demolition of the Kirkgate Centre in Summer 2026.
