Bradford Civic Society will be unveiling two new blue plaques in Bradford as part of our ongoing campaign to honour more great women from the district.
On Saturday 19 October, we will be unveiling a blue plaque for the author Malachi Whitaker at her birthplace in Wrose. The event will begin at 11am at Bolton Villas Church with refreshments, before the unveiling itself at 12 midday on Clara Road.
Malachi was a renowned author of short stories and became fondly known as the “Bradford Chekhov” by her creative contemporaries. Her plays were frequently broadcast on BBC Radio.
On Tuesday 29 October, we will be unveiling a blue plaque for the George Cross recipient Barbara Jane Harrison at Bradford City Hall. The event will begin at 11am inside the Banqueting Hall with refreshments, before the unveiling itself at 12 midday.
Jane (as she was known to friends and family) was the first, and to date only, female recipient of the George Cross for bravery in peacetime. She saved the lives of many passengers during an aeroplane fire at Heathrow Airport in 1968, but sadly died herself during the incident.
All are welcome to attend both events.
