Bradford in Blue Plaques: Manningham Mills

Manningham Mills Strike

Nominated by Eleanor Barrett, Co-Director of the Brick Box

“At the junction of Lilycroft Road and Heaton Road is a blue plaque fixed to one of the most iconic industrial landmarks in the UK.

“I nominate this blue plaque because I went to Primary school opposite Lister’s Mill, and I remember being awed by the chimney on a daily basis.

“As I got older I noticed it rearing up from almost every corner of the city and it’s how I always pictured Bradford in my mind during the twenty years I was away.

“Now I’ve returned, I live a stone’s throw away from the mill in one of the worker’s back to backs. I love the thought that the people who once lived in my house would have been involved in the Manningham Mills strike and contributed to the founding of the Independent Labour Party.

“As a ‘dyed in the wool’ socialist and a proud Bradfordian there is nowhere in the world I could possibly imagine feeling more at home.”
