First look at new vision for Darley Street market

Bradford Civic Society has been given a first look at a new artists’ impression of what a new central food market for Bradford could look like.

Under the ambitious proposals, Bradford Council would create a new food market on Darley Street at the former Marks & Spencer site, with a refurbished non-food focussed market inside the Kirkgate Centre. Darley Street itself will be part covered by an iconic canopy, with space for outdoor markets and pop-up events. Once both new markets are open, it’s envisaged that the Oastler Centre [formerly John Street Market] will be demolished to make room for housing.

Now Bradford Civic Society can reveal that the new food market plan will involve the creation of an iconic new destination on Darley Street, as seen in this first artists’ impression.

Si Cunningham, Chair of Bradford Civic Society, has welcomed the new proposals. He said: “I think the first artists’ impression of the new market looks pretty spectacular, and it’s exactly the sort of bold design solution that Bradford needs right now. Covering part of Darley Street and better linking the site to Kirkgate is an inspired move, and should create an attractive public space. It looks like a market that’s fit for the future. I look forward to seeing how the plans develop and engaging with the council and markets team to ensure that the space meets the highest design standards.”
