New online exhibition for May: 4000 Miles to Home

As part of Bradford Civic Society’s series to celebrate Bradford’s people and places during the ongoing lockdown period, we are proud to present ‘4000 Miles to Home – The Virtual Exhibition’.

This collection of photographs and stories was originally hosted at Bradford Mechanics’ Institute in 2019. Its curator, Gurj Kang, has now worked to make the exhibition available for all to enjoy online throughout the month of May.

4000 Miles to Home – Foreword, by Gurj Kang

“This exhibition was marked by a series of academic works and discussions on the stories and photos of Akbal Singh Kang.

“An arrival into the country aged 11 in 1961, he followed his Father, Sarwan Singh who arrived in the 1950’s, and documented the life of his family and his community throughout his life. His work from the 1960’s, and 1950’s archive is shown throughout this series.

“The pictures detail a vibrant, driven and thriving community that managed to develop its journey of 4000 miles into a journey of personal growth and success, within the region and in the fields of Education and Professionally.

“Their experience was also heavily shaped by the region and its Industry, which is also shown here with glimpses of Mill and working life for this wave of immigration into Bradford. The journey was to leave an indelible mark, and build foundations for a new home.”

May 2020.

The full eight-part series has now been archived on the Bradford Civic Society website and can be seen here.
